On 23rd March 2024, JAFOA launched the campaign “A Roof on the Head of Each Vulnerable Older Person” to address the critical needs of Uganda’s aging population. The initiative is dedicated to providing secure and dignified living conditions for the elderly, many of whom are pillars of their communities yet remain some of the most vulnerable members of society.
In Uganda, older persons play a crucial role in the creation of wealth, the care of orphans and vulnerable children, and the preservation of cultural traditions. Their contributions to community cohesion, conflict resolution, and poverty eradication cannot be overstated. Despite their invaluable role, many older Ugandans live in rural areas, with about 85% engaged in crop farming without any form of social security. The burden of caring for orphans left behind by the HIV/AIDS epidemic, coupled with age-related discrimination, has left many elderly Ugandans struggling in silence.
Ageism is a pervasive issue in Uganda, with many older persons facing neglect, isolation, and abuse due to a lack of awareness of their rights. The campaign, therefore, seeks not only to provide physical shelter but also to raise awareness about the rights of older persons, combat ageism, and ensure that they are treated with the dignity and respect they deserve.
The “A Roof on the Head of Each Vulnerable Older Person” campaign focuses on constructing and renovating homes for elderly individuals who lack secure shelter. The campaign’s goal is to improve the living conditions of older persons across Uganda, ensuring that they have a safe and dignified place to call home. By addressing the housing needs of the elderly, JAFOA aims to alleviate some of the economic pressures faced by this vulnerable group, allowing them to continue contributing to their communities without the fear of homelessness.
The launch event on 23rd March was a significant step forward in advocating for the rights and welfare of Uganda’s older population. Community leaders, policymakers, and volunteers came together to highlight the importance of supporting older persons, not only as a matter of social justice but as a recognition of the vital role they play in society.
JAFOA’s commitment to improving the lives of older Ugandans is a powerful reminder that a society’s strength is measured by how it treats its most vulnerable members. The “A Roof on the Head of Each Vulnerable Older Person” campaign is more than just a housing project; it is a movement to ensure that older persons in Uganda are seen, heard, and valued for the incredible contributions they make every day.
As the campaign progresses, JAFOA will continue to engage with communities, build partnerships, and mobilize resources to extend this initiative to as many older persons as possible. The ultimate goal is to create a future where every elderly Ugandan has a safe roof over their head and the support they need to live with dignity and respect.
In a world that often overlooks the elderly, JAFOA is shining a light on their needs and rights, ensuring that they are not forgotten, but celebrated and supported in their golden years.
