Lira and Kumi Districts, Uganda – August 21, 2023
In a bold move to uplift the lives of older persons Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC), JAFOA (Joint Action for Older Adults) recently launched a comprehensive assessment initiative in the Omito, Ober, and Amuca parishes within Lira and Barr sub-counties of Lira and Kumi Districts. This landmark intervention aimed to address the unique challenges faced by these vulnerable populations and provide them with much-needed relief and support.
Cause of Action: The major intervention revolved around assessing the living conditions of older persons and OVC under their care. This initiative stemmed from JAFOA’s commitment to protecting and promoting the rights of these individuals. Recognizing the limitations rural older persons face in meeting their medical expenses and the needs of children and young people in their care, JAFOA sought to make a tangible impact on their lives.
Target Audience: The initiative’s target audience included older persons, many of whom are living without family connections and caregivers, along with the OVC under their guardianship. By addressing the concerns of these vulnerable groups, JAFOA aimed to create a ripple effect that would uplift the entire community.
Expectations: JAFOA’s intervention set high expectations for a comprehensive assessment that would provide insight into the specific needs of older persons and OVC. Through this initiative, the organization sought to identify the challenges faced by these individuals, provide immediate relief through COVID-19 support, and develop recommendations to improve their overall living conditions.
Outcomes
Kick-Start Meeting with LC 3 Chairperson: The initiative commenced with a crucial kick-start meeting with the LC 3 Chairperson. The meeting’s objective was to introduce the JAFOA team and garner his support for the assessment. The LC 3 Chairperson expressed his appreciation for JAFOA’s work and pledged his commitment to championing the rights of older persons. His concerns about the challenges faced by rural older persons resonated with the organization’s mission.
