JAFOA (Joint Action for Older Adults) is pleased to present its annual report, offering a comprehensive snapshot of its activities from January to December 2019. The report provides a detailed insight into the services rendered to its targeted population, older persons, along with a transparent financial overview. The report not only presents the achievements of the past year but also outlines the lessons learned and sets the groundwork for the organization’s endeavors in 2020.

Introduction to the Report: JAFOA’s annual report for the year 2019 encapsulates a year of dedication and unwavering commitment to the well-being of older persons. The report goes beyond statistics and numbers to convey the impact of JAFOA’s work on the ground, focusing on Kayunga District in the Central region and Kumi District in the Northern region. Additionally, it sheds light on the organization’s financial performance, offering an in-depth understanding of its income sources and expenditures. The report acts as a compass, guiding JAFOA’s aspirations for 2020 through the lessons it has learned.

Key Activities/Achievements: Throughout 2019, JAFOA’s primary focus was to ensure that older persons in Kayunga District and Kumi District had unfettered access to high-quality healthcare services. The organization achieved this through a series of strategic initiatives, with particular emphasis on International Days for Older Persons (IDOP) and National Elder Abuse Days.

The cornerstone of JAFOA’s efforts was its meticulously organized medical camps. These camps provided a platform for JAFOA to reach out to 251 geriatric patients, aged 60 and above. The comprehensive range of services included health education, diagnosis, treatment, and referrals.

Common Health Conditions Identified: The medical camps uncovered a spectrum of health conditions that affect older persons disproportionately. Conditions such as arthritis, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and peptic ulcer disease emerged as common concerns among the older population. Infections affecting various bodily systems, including the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tracts, were also prevalent.

Eye conditions, particularly vision loss due to cataracts, featured prominently among older individuals. Furthermore, the camps revealed the prevalence of retroviral diseases and associated opportunistic infections like tuberculosis, fungal skin infections, and oral thrush. Although less common, the discovery of surgical conditions like uterine fibroids, cysts, growths, and lipomas underscored the diverse healthcare needs of older persons.

Moving Forward:

The report highlights the importance of continued efforts in capturing a comprehensive understanding of the health conditions older people’s face. Beyond medical camps, door-to-door visits and regular health education are identified as key strategies to address the unique challenges of the older population. These strategies are especially critical for those residing in rural areas with limited access to social services.

JAFOA’s annual report paints a vivid picture of the organization’s commitment to older persons and their well-being. As the organization sets its sights on 2020, the lessons learned from the past year provide valuable guidance for JAFOA’s future endeavors. By focusing on health education, disease prevention, and tailored support, JAFOA remains a beacon of hope for older persons seeking a brighter and healthier future.
